Headliners include funky West Coast favorite The Polish Ambassador, psychedelic bass project LSDREAM from trap artist Brillz, and the roots-rocking dance party of The California Honeydrops. Rounding out the top of the fold are world-infused electronic masterminds Dirtwire, folk songstress and environmental activist Ayla Nereo, world electronica producer The Human Experience, and An-ten-nae who will perform a hypnotizing, ethereal “medicine set.”
In addition to Ayla Nereo, a plethora of powerful female voices are presented throughout the weekend. A Hundred Drums is a producer, educator, and activist whose vision resonates with Lucidity Festival’s 2020 theme, Regeneration Earth. From British Columbia, ill-ēsha and The Librarian return to the Lucidity stage. Dela Moon is one of the co-founders of Moontribe, legendary full moon gatherings held in the California desert. House DJ Tara Brooks has risen to popularity with legendary sets at Desert Hearts and Seattle-based folk-electronica duo Yaima create an entrancing soundscape of ethereal world music.
“The diversity of artists and the sheer volume of choices rival events with ten times the attendance. You get a very personalized experience with so much to discover,” said Lucidity Festival Marketing Director Jonah Haas. He pointed to Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee which also features about 150 acts with more than 65,000 attendees. Lucidity Festival typically has around 5,000 guests over the weekend.
Attendees can discover new music as the lineup features a number of up-and-coming artists. Rising star sumthin’ sumthin’ crafts high-energy, glitchy lo-fi that is garnering acclaim and an infectious dance floor energy. Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Mendeleyev was featured on The Voice, where he was selected and coached by John Legend. Trumpet player, producer, and ethnomusicologist Balkan Bump has collaborated with Clozee, Gramatik, and Talib Kweli. Cofresi’s hybrid style mixes DJing and digital-acoustic drumming for a dynamic live-electronic performance of cutting edge bass music.
Many artists have been a part of the Lucidity soundscape for years and provide a foundation of continuity and understanding of the festival’s evolving themes and intentions. The Luv Amp Project is a Los Angeles collaboration of powerful and inspirational messages. Priya Deepika’s debut album won Best World Music song in the 2017 Global Peace Song Awards. San Luis Obisbo’s live house band Tropo have played many times over the years and are making their comeback in 2020 since last performing in 2016. TV Broken 3rd Eye Open and Groovesession return to take audiences on a funky psychedelic journey to another dimension.
There are five core stages at the event: The Lucidity Stage features an eclectic mix of high-energy electronic funk, bass music and world beat, jam bands, and live electronic acts. Nomad’s Nook is the home for house and techno during the day and late-night dubstep. The Dusty Barrel has been a stalwart space for live music with a focus on roots-based americana, bluegrass, funk, and acoustic artists. The Water Realm is a spiritual center of sacred and uplifting music and art. The IncLucidity stage is a collaborative space curated by local collectives Divine Species, Underground Souls, and Space Milk. In addition to the five official stages, there are additional sets held throughout the weekend at a number of pop-up venues, including the Family Garden, the PyroBar art car, and the Branches Art Gallery.
Many artists see Lucidity Festival as an opportunity to debut new projects and take the audience in new, experimental directions. The event, which bills itself as a “transformational festival,” is now in its ninth year. Many artists choose to spend the whole weekend there, even if they are only booked for one night. Some of this year’s side-project sets include The Human Experience’s folk-electro concept Gone Gone Beyond, An-ten-ae’s low-key house set called “The Invisible People,” and Heartwurkz, a joyous livetronica project between Ahee (Lucent Dossier Experience) and Ash Tree.
“As you work your way through the lineup, we hit all the genres that our audience is talking about,” said Brion Shearer, who leads the talent buying team. “Jam music, world music, Conscious music. House, techno, and glitchy, wobbly, dirty bass. We spread it out across the weekend with thought put into how things transition from artist to artist and stage to stage. We have taken great care to make sure that the same style of music is not booked at the same time. This allows ticket buyers to hopefully catch every act they want to see without feeling like they are missing out.” Shearer leads a team of talent scouts and buyers including Brian Coe, Bix King Kaufman (EOS Lounge), Nathan Harvey, Alan “Metatron” Avila, and Amy Krohn.
